How do Neurotoxins work?
Neurotoxins (Botox, Xeomin, Daxxify) cause relaxation of facial muscles. BOTOX Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium and an FDA-approved substance that safely smooths specific muscles in the face that cause wrinkles. It is a non-surgical treatment that can temporarily reduce moderate to severe wrinkles. The product works by blocking the communication between nerve endings and their surrounding muscles. Botox, Xeomin, or Daxxify is injected into specific regions to treat overactive muscles that cause wrinkles with facial animation. The effect of neurotoxins (Botox, Xeomin, Daxxify) are temporary and repeated treatments are necessary periodically to maintain the softening of facial furrows and creases.
HOW MANY UNITS WILL I NEED?
The amount of units needed will depend on how many treatment areas you’d like to cover, as well as the size and strength of the muscle. The number of units you need will be assessed by your injector during the consult.
What are Neurotoxins?
Injectable solutions that temporarily block nerve receptors in the muscle, preventing lines and wrinkles from forming.
How long do neurotoxins Cosmetic last?
Neurotoxins (Botox, Xeomin, Daxxify) will begin showing results within 1 week and reach its full effect by week 2. These effects can last between 3 to 4 months. For Daxxify these effects can last between 4 to 9 months.
Who should not use Neurotoxins?
Neurotoxins should not be used in the presence of infection at the injection site(s) and in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the formulation. Patients with neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects. Prior to treatment, we ask that you avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John's Wort, or high doses of Vitamin E prior to taking treatment as these products may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site.
Will I experience any side effects?
The most common side effects following injection include localized pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, bleeding/bruising, headaches, and temporary eyelid droop and nausea. Patients with certain neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects.
Is there a rebound effect when botox wears off and one does not go in for repeat injections?
No, the muscle activity should return to its original state when the neurotoxin wears off.
